Axel Rudakubana, the Southport killer currently serving a life sentence, has appeared in court facing fresh charges related to incidents that occurred while he was imprisoned. Among the allegations is an attack on a prison officer involving the throwing of boiling water mixed with sugar through the hatch in Rudakubana’s cell door on 8 May last year. The 20-year-old is accused of attempted grievous bodily harm in connection with this incident at HMP Belmarsh.
In addition to this charge, Rudakubana faces accusations of two further assaults on prison officers, as well as possession of an offensive weapon while incarcerated. During his court appearance via video link from Broadmoor secure psychiatric hospital, he was dressed in a tracksuit top and spoke briefly only to confirm his identity and acknowledge he could hear the magistrate. At times, he rested his head on his hand throughout the hearing.
The prosecution, led by Catherine Pattinson, outlined additional threats and attacks allegedly carried out by Rudakubana in prison. It was claimed that on 6 May 2025, he threatened to douse a female officer in a liquid if she did not hand him a newspaper, subsequently throwing an unknown substance at her through the cell door hatch. Another assault mentioned occurred on 28 October last year when Rudakubana allegedly punched a male officer in the face while the officer was attempting to check if he had taken his medication. The offensive weapon charge relates to sharpened stone fragments thought to have been prised from the floor of Rudakubana’s cell and found hidden under a shelving unit. When questioned about these items, Rudakubana reportedly said he kept them for self-defense.
Rudakubana, who is already serving a life sentence for the murders of three children and the attempted murder of several others during a 2024 attack at a Taylor Swift-themed dance class in Southport, was not asked to enter pleas during Monday’s hearing. He was remanded in custody and is scheduled to appear at the Old Bailey on 19 October.
