Jason Zadrozny, the leader of Ashfield District Council, has been convicted on charges of fraud and tax evasion. Hailing from Stanton Hill, Zadrozny was accused of creating a fictitious heritage organization with the intention of defrauding Nottinghamshire County Council out of several thousand pounds. In addition, it was claimed that he neglected to pay taxes on income derived from four rental properties.
The 46-year-old former Ashfield Independents councillor at Nottinghamshire County Council was found guilty on nine counts of fraud and four counts of tax evasion following the conclusion of a trial. The jury at Northampton Crown Court reached their decision after nearly 11 hours of deliberation.
During proceedings, evidence was presented that Zadrozny had established the Ashfield Heritage Society (AHS) in 2018 and subsequently sought funding from Nottinghamshire County Council. Prosecutors detailed how the funds granted were transferred into Zadrozny’s personal bank account rather than being used for their intended purpose. The tax evasion charges related to his failure to declare income from the rental properties.
Following the guilty verdict, the presiding judge informed Zadrozny that sentencing is scheduled for 27 November. He was cautioned that an immediate custodial sentence was a possibility. The judge expressed gratitude to the jury for their diligence throughout the trial and confirmed that Zadrozny would remain on unconditional bail until his sentencing date
