Idris Thomas, an avid metal detectorist, experienced an extraordinary discovery while searching farmland in Llanuwchllyn, Gwynedd. Having previously only uncovered a silver coin, Thomas was stunned when his metal detector revealed a late Bronze Age gold bracelet. Experts from Museum Wales analyzed the find and determined that the bracelet is approximately 3,000 years old and composed of 92.8% gold. Brett Hammond, CEO of Timeline Auctions, has estimated the bracelet’s value to lie between £15,000 and £20,000, though an official valuation is yet to be finalized.
The artifact was found on farmland owned by Geraint Edwards after Thomas had been scanning the area for around 20 minutes. Initially mistaking the signal for tin foil, he was soon surprised to uncover a gleam of gold buried in the soil. At a treasure inquest held in Caernarfon, deputy coroner Sarah Riley described the bracelet as “absolutely stunning.” According to experts, such an item likely belonged to a person of significant status within their Bronze Age farming community. Edwards, the landowner, remarked on the unique feeling of the land and expressed curiosity about the origins of the gold, noting that the bracelet lacks any kind of hallmark or stamp—a reflection of its ancient age.
The bracelet is currently being sent away for further analysis and official recording. Edwards shared how meaningful the find has become to him, commenting, “Some people never have the chance to find such a thing on their own land,” and describing the experience as “a great feeling.” Meanwhile, Thomas called the discovery “once in a lifetime,” expressing his excitement and disbelief at the find. He revealed that his interest in metal detecting was sparked by watching the activity on television, and that despite two years of searching, this was his most remarkable discovery to date.
Following the independent appraisal by the Treasure Valuation Committee, Storiel Museum and Art Gallery has shown interest in acquiring the bracelet. Both the British Museum and Museum Wales have been approached for comment regarding the find.
