Donald Trump is currently visiting the Republic of Ireland for a two-day trip. During his stay, the former US president is spending time at Trump International Golf Links in Doonbeg, County Clare, where he is attending the Irish Open. On Saturday, he met with Ireland’s President Catherine Connolly as well as Taoiseach Micheál Martin, engaging in discussions that attracted significant attention.
At a meeting with Taoiseach Martin in Dublin, Trump expressed his views about the future of Ireland, stating that he would love to see a united Ireland. He remarked, “a united Ireland would happen eventually” and described Martin as “the right man over here to get it moving.” Trump further commented at Farmleigh House in Phoenix Park, calling a united Ireland a “fantastic thing.” He acknowledged that the United Kingdom would have concerns but concluded, “how can it be bad?”
The Prime Minister’s office responded to Trump’s remarks by referencing comments made by Prime Minister Andy Burnham in the House of Commons. Burnham reaffirmed his commitment to the Good Friday Agreement and noted that any decision on a border poll would depend on clear public consensus in Northern Ireland. Meanwhile, a representative for Taoiseach Martin stated that Trump’s position on Irish unity was consistent and should “come as a surprise to no one.”
Outside of official meetings, there was considerable public opposition to Trump’s visit in Dublin. Over 10,000 protesters marched through the city to voice their disapproval of the former president and his policies, aiming to send a clear message despite Trump having departed the city just as the protest began. Meanwhile, Trump, an avid golf enthusiast, planned to stay and watch the concluding day of the Irish Open, having previously played a round with golf star Rory McIlroy in early 2025 and praised McIlroy’s achievements after his back-to-back Masters victories.
