Canberk Beker, a 31-year-old walker from Langland, Swansea, was taken aback when he discovered an SUV obstructing the Wales Coast Path on a Saturday morning stroll with his wife, Bethan Jones. The vehicle, a blue Kia Sportage, was stuck between a concrete fence post and a bench along the route between Mumbles and Langland Bay, completely blocking the path. Canberk recounted his surprise, saying, “It was completely covering the path. I was looking inside the car.”
The driver of the SUV was not present at the scene. From the signs, including a car seat lying down and damage to a bench nearby, it appeared that whoever was driving had attempted to exit through the boot of the vehicle before leaving it behind. Canberk noted that another bench further along the path had also been broken, suggesting the vehicle had caused damage while becoming trapped. He expressed concern about the dangerous location, remarking, “They were lucky not to have driven over the cliff edge. They would have died. It’s such a high cliff.”
Local authority perspectives shed further light on the incident. Mumbles councillor Will Thomas revealed that this wasn’t the first time such an event had occurred on the path; the latest incident happened on a Friday night, marking the third occurrence. Mr. Thomas has contacted council officers with proposals to install gates or bollards at the path’s entrance to prevent vehicles from accessing it. He speculated that the driver might have confused the walking route with a drivable road due to a mix-up on their sat nav, adding, “I think someone has mixed up their sat nav and put a walking route into it. It must be because I don’t think the people who are doing this are kids.”
The car has since been removed from the footpath. Councillor Thomas noted its location was about half a mile down the trail, farther than previous incidents, which occurred just 300 to 400 metres from the path’s start. South Wales Police confirmed they did not attend the scene. The unusual event left walkers like Canberk both stunned and grateful that the outcome was not more serious
