Ryan Bridge, aged 45 and hailing from Blackwell, Bromsgrove in Worcestershire, faces multiple charges following his role as the founder of an activist group known for placing Union Jack and St George’s Cross flags on lampposts. The campaign, called Raise the Colours, has seen Bridge putting up flags across areas in the Midlands and southern England since the previous summer.
According to Thames Valley Police, Bridge has been charged with fourteen offenses that occurred over a two-month span earlier this year in Oxfordshire. These charges include serious allegations ranging from racially aggravated harassment to assault, as well as various forms of threatening behavior. He is scheduled to appear before Oxford Magistrates’ Court on the 3rd of November.
The charges against Bridge comprise multiple counts of aggression and harassment, notably: seven instances of using threatening words or behavior to cause harassment, alarm, or distress; three counts involving threatening, abusive, or insulting words or actions intended to provoke fear or unlawful violence; and several racially aggravated offenses, including harassment and fear of violence. Additionally, there is one count of common assault among the charges.
Concerns regarding the placement of flags near highways have led to legal action by local authorities. Oxfordshire County Council successfully obtained a High Court injunction in July, aiming to prevent people from erecting flags near roads due to issues related to safety, trespassing, and obstruction. Similarly, Birmingham City Council has sought a comparable injunction, with a hearing scheduled at the High Court for Tuesday
