Major disruption as grass fire hits Heathrow train links

Train services to and from Heathrow Airport were disrupted after a grass fire near the railway tracks caused significant delays and cancellations. The incident, which began shortly after 16:00 BST on Saturday, led to what National Rail described as “major disruption” expected to continue throughout the day. The fire resulted in an electricity supply failure that blocked all rail lines between London Paddington station, Heathrow’s terminals, and Reading.

This disruption on the rail network coincided with an earlier grass fire on Heathrow’s airfield that forced the closure of the airport’s southern runway. As a result, at least two flights were diverted, and the airport issued an apology for any inconvenience caused. Fire crews managed to extinguish that fire quickly. Heathrow had recently experienced a similar incident involving a grass fire near the southern runway, which damaged a large area of grassland and caused 18 flight diversions.

Social media images showed stranded passengers at Paddington, one of London’s busiest rail stations. The London Fire Brigade mobilized six fire engines and around 40 firefighters to tackle the blaze near Scrubs Lane in North Kensington. Great Western Railway cancelled services to Reading, and London’s Elizabeth line and Heathrow Express trains were suspended between Paddington and Heathrow on Saturday night. The airport also advised travelers to allow extra time for their journeys, noting delays on the Piccadilly line, which serves the airport.

Despite recent cooler weather following the summer’s record-breaking heat, fire crews continue to warn of wildfire risks. According to the Met Office’s Fire Severity Index, if a wildfire were to occur, it would have a “high” severity rating in most parts of southeast England and some areas of the Midlands. The index rates fire severity as “exceptional” in certain areas, including parts of London around Heathrow, as well as the Essex and Suffolk coasts, indicating a particularly high risk in these locations
