Her Majesty The Queen recently made a visit to Spellow Community Hub and Library in Walton to gain insight into how the community united in the wake of the riots that occurred two years prior. The events in August 2024 had inflicted severe fire and water damage on the building, which sparked a strong public outcry. This devastation was particularly disheartening as the library had only been refurbished a year earlier through funding from the Town Centre Fund, supported by Liverpool City Region Mayor Steve Rotheram.
Following the damage caused by the riots, numerous individuals contributed to the library’s recovery efforts. Among the donors of books was Her Majesty Queen Camilla, alongside notable figures like Waterstones Children’s Laureate Frank Cottrell-Boyce and chef Nigella Lawson. In addition, a GoFundMe campaign led by Alex McCormick successfully raised £250,000 to aid the library’s restoration. Since reopening its doors in December 2024, the library has flourished once more as a central hub for the community, providing facilities such as free smart classrooms, adaptable learning spaces, parent-and-toddler groups, and access to local council services.
During the visit on Friday, 4 September, The Queen engaged with staff and children from St Francis De Sales Catholic Infant and Nursery School as well as Arnot St Mary Church of England Primary School. She also met with library employees and first responders who played crucial roles immediately after the riots. Her Majesty participated in various activities, including listening to a poem about Spellow Hub by Frank Cottrell-Boyce and playing chess with some of the young visitors.
Local leaders expressed their admiration for the resilience shown by the Walton community. Liverpool City Council Leader, Cllr Liam Robinson, remarked on the honor of hosting The Queen and highlighted how the community’s response to the 2024 events demonstrated the city’s strength in difficult times. Councillor Harry Doyle praised the lasting impact of the donated books, now part of the library’s extensive collection that circulates 22,000 items annually. Steve Rotheram, Mayor of the Liverpool City Region, reflected on the unity shown by people across the region and beyond, commending the transformation of Spellow Hub from a site of destruction into a powerful symbol of community spirit. Author Frank Cottrell-Boyce emphasized the importance of libraries like Spellow as community anchors and praised the collective effort to restore the library, describing reading as a gift that nurtures children’s dreams and confidence.
