A man is scheduled to face trial for the murder of a police station janitor in Glasgow, an incident that occurred over 27 years ago. Allan Humphrey, aged 68, stands accused of fatally stabbing Michael McManus as he made his way to work at Baird Street Police Station in Riddrie on 13 July 1999. Court documents allege that Humphrey inflicted stab wounds on the body and leg of the 46-year-old janitor using a knife or a similar weapon. During a hearing at the High Court in Glasgow, Humphrey denied the charge of murder.
In his defense, Donald Findlay KC presented a special defense asserting that another individual, Michael Todd, was responsible. However, Findlay revealed that Todd passed away several years ago, presenting a considerable obstacle for the defense in the upcoming trial. He stated, “There is nothing I can do about it if he is dead, he is dead.” Prosecutor Alex Prentice KC also informed the court that some witnesses connected to the case have died since the incident took place.
Michael McManus, who was known as Mike to those familiar with him, had served as a janitor at the police station for three years before his death. Reports from the time indicated that McManus was assaulted while walking to work, having been seen shouting in Ness Street shortly before a passerby discovered his body. In response, police set up checkpoints in the Riddrie neighborhood to try to gather information from anyone who might recall the events surrounding the attack.
The trial is expected to rely heavily on eyewitness testimony, as there is no CCTV footage available to shed light on the crime. Judge Lord Scott has scheduled an eight-day trial at the High Court in Edinburgh, set to begin in November 2027
