Liverpool Libraries and Information Services are encouraging both locals and visitors to explore the city’s vibrant social history this September through a series of free events and exhibitions. These activities are part of the Heritage Open Days 2026 programme, which runs from the 11th to the 20th of the month. Developed in collaboration with local partners, the initiative highlights the stories, individuals, and locations that have played a key role in shaping Liverpool’s past.
Heritage Open Days is England’s largest festival dedicated to history and culture, focusing on the narratives of everyday people and the often overlooked sites and institutions that have contributed to community development over time. This year, Liverpool’s programme aligns with the national theme, “Everyday Histories,” placing emphasis on working-class life, local heritage, and communal experiences. Events include exhibitions, workshops, and guided tours that delve into these topics.
One notable event is the Liverpool Irish Oral History Workshop at Allerton Library scheduled for Monday, 14th September. Run by The Sound Agents, this free, drop-in session invites participants to share personal stories related to their Irish heritage and help preserve Liverpool’s living history. Attendees are encouraged to bring photographs or mementos, especially those who have connections to second or third-generation Irish families.
Additionally, the Liverpool Record Office Heritage Trail will be available from the 11th to the 19th of September across several libraries including Allerton, Kensington, Norris Green, Spellow, and Toxteth. Organized by the Liverpool Record Office at Central Library, the trail features archive displays showcasing objects and documents tied to the Daily Histories theme, providing visitors with a unique insight into the lives of past residents. Meanwhile, Toxteth Library will present an exhibition titled “George Garrett: Everyday Histories – Liverpool’s Working-Class Writer and Unsung Hero,” honoring the writer, seafarer, and social historian, with representatives available on select days to discuss Garrett’s lasting impact. Furthermore, free heritage tours will be conducted from 12 to 19 September at Liverpool Central Library to explore the building’s history, the stories of local pottery workers, and other elements of Liverpool’s heritage. Although these tours are currently fully booked, tickets may be reissued in case of cancellations.
