The Liverpool Young Futures Apprenticeship Programme is now accepting applications, offering 29 paid apprenticeships specifically for young residents of Liverpool. This initiative provides an opportunity for participants to earn while they learn, gaining valuable experience and helping to shape their future careers within their own city. Deputy Council Leader and Cabinet Member for Finance, Resources and Transformation, Cllr Ruth Bennett, shared insights into why the council decided to introduce this programme.
As students across Liverpool have recently received their GCSE and A Level results, many will be considering university as their next step. However, higher education is not always the preferred or suitable route for every young person. Recognizing this, the council allocated funding during this year’s budget setting to create meaningful apprenticeships—focused on offering jobs within Liverpool for local youth.
These apprenticeships cover a diverse range of sectors such as marketing, digital content creation, ICT, environmental health, emergency resilience, housing, parks and green spaces, health and social care, and venue operations. Participants will be paid the real Living Wage and will simultaneously work towards nationally recognised qualifications while gaining valuable hands-on experience.
The programme targets Liverpool residents aged 16 to 20, with extended eligibility up to 24 years old for young people holding an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) or those with care experience, including council care leavers residing outside the city. Prospective apprentices submit just one application, simplifying the process, and will later be able to specify their preferred roles. Building on the council’s current workforce of around 60 apprentices and 25 graduates, Liverpool Young Futures is designed to expand opportunities for young locals embarking on their careers. As Cllr Bennett points out, local government work is deeply rewarding because of the positive impact it has, and this programme is essential in developing the future workforce while supporting recruitment from the community.
