Killer jailed for life for murdering flatmate in Walthamstow

A man has received a life sentence in the UK after being convicted of killing his flatmate, an incident occurring just three years following his release from prison in Romania for a very similar crime. The individual, Eugeniu Neamtu, 59, also known as Jimmy, was found guilty of stabbing Gheorghe Trica, 63, his flatmate, in Walthamstow, east London, on February 20.

During the hearing at the Old Bailey, Mr Justice Marks handed down a life sentence, setting a minimum term of 27 years before Neamtu can be considered for release. The court was informed that the fatal stabbing of Trica bore a close resemblance to a previous murder Neamtu committed in Romania.

Back in 2006, Neamtu had killed another housemate in Romania under nearly identical conditions. The court heard that the earlier offense involved Neamtu repeatedly stabbing his victim in the chest during a drunken dispute over money. This prior murder led to Neamtu’s 15-year imprisonment in Romania, starting in May 2007.
