Mrs Brown's Boys Christmas specials cancelled after star breaks jaw

Brendan O’Carroll, the creator and leading actor of the popular television sitcom Mrs Brown’s Boys, has revealed that the upcoming Christmas and New Year specials scheduled for 2026 will not be filmed. The reason for this decision is that he requires surgery due to a broken jaw.

In a message shared on Instagram, the 70-year-old actor and writer explained that an urgent operation is necessary following the discovery of two fractures in his mandible, confirmed by a CT scan. This injury means that the production of the holiday episodes must be postponed to allow for his recovery.

O’Carroll expressed his regret about the situation, stating: “It is with sincere regret I must announce that due to an unexpected medical issue I will have to cancel the recordings of the 2026 Mrs Brown’s Boys Christmas and New Year’s Specials.” He also mentioned ongoing discussions with the BBC about the possibility of returning with new episodes in 2027.

Since its debut in 2011, Mrs Brown’s Boys has been a staple of British comedy, featuring O’Carroll as the sharp-tongued Irish matriarch Agnes Brown. Filmed at BBC Scotland’s studios in Glasgow, the show continues to captivate audiences despite receiving mixed reviews from critics and has earned several awards at the National Television Awards
