A series of warning signs about the risks associated with algae poisoning will soon be installed around England’s largest lake. Approximately 40 notice boards are set to be placed around Windermere in the Lake District, alerting visitors to the presence of blue-green algae blooms. These blooms can produce toxins harmful to humans and potentially deadly to pets.
Blue-green algae, which appear more frequently during warm and dry conditions, develop naturally but are worsened by nutrients such as phosphates found in pollutants like sewage. In addition to the signs at Windermere, the Environment Agency (EA), which is funding the initiative, will also place another 40 signs at various locations throughout Cumbria.
The Love Windermere Partnership—a collaboration involving the EA, the Lake District National Park Authority, and United Utilities—is responding to public calls for “clearer and more consistent public information” by installing these permanent signs. These notices will not only describe the appearance of blue-green algae but will also guide visitors on where to find up-to-date information on blooms.
Visitors will learn that these microscopic organisms often look like blue-green paint, scum, or greenish-brown discoloration on the water’s surface. The signs will also inform the public about how to report suspected sightings using the Bloomin’ Algae app, making it easier for authorities to monitor and address outbreaks
