Authorities have arrested a fourth former South Yorkshire Police officer in connection with non-recent child exploitation and abuse allegations. To date, ten victims have come forward alleging sexual abuse by ex-police officers in the Rotherham area. This development is part of an ongoing investigation into serious historic offences.
The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has recently provided an update to the National Crime Agency (NCA), which has been leading the inquiry into accusations of child sexual abuse involving former members of the South Yorkshire Police force. Earlier reports from the BBC in July 2025 highlighted claims from five women who had been exploited by grooming gangs during their childhood and also abused by police officers in Rotherham during the 1990s and early 2000s.
Initially, South Yorkshire Police conducted its own investigation into the conduct of former officers, but the case was eventually taken over by the NCA. Among the testimonies, one woman recounted that she was raped from the age of 12 by an officer while he was on duty in a marked police car. She stated that the officer threatened to “hand her back to the gang” if she did not submit to his demands.
The arrests have been ongoing since December 2024, with three former officers detained on suspicions including attempted rape, indecent assault, and misconduct in public office. A man in his 60s was apprehended by the NCA in June on similar allegations and was subsequently released on conditional bail as investigations continue. None of the arrested individuals have faced formal charges yet. The alleged offences are said to have occurred between 1995 and 2004 while the suspects were active police constables. These incidents are part of the wider context of abuse in Rotherham, where a 2014 report by Professor Alexis Jay revealed that at least 1,400 children suffered abuse at the hands of men involved in grooming gangs from 1997 to 2013
