A remarkable act of kindness has emerged from Yeovil, Somerset, where Giles Richards undertook an extraordinary physical challenge to support a stranger battling incurable cancer. Richards ran nearly 200 miles—specifically 192 miles (310 km)—to help fund a special trip for Kayleigh Ewan, who was recently diagnosed with metastatic cancer that has spread to her spine and liver. Despite not knowing Ewan personally, Richards was inspired to assist after hearing about her situation from his partner.
Kayleigh Ewan, aged 36, was initially diagnosed with breast cancer in 2018 and experienced six years of remission following treatment. However, her condition worsened this year when doctors found her cancer had progressed to a metastatic stage. With the prognosis now incurable, she has chosen to share daily videos on social media as a way of finding purpose and connection. “It gives you a purpose every day because you have to get up and get dressed to do the video,” she explained. “I feel like you don’t really have a choice when you’re in this situation and you have to just go. You obviously get good and bad days.”
Richards, who admits he was never a runner before this challenge, committed to running 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) each day for over a month to raise money for Ewan’s dream trip to Australia. His dedication has already resulted in raising more than £4,600. Reflecting on his experience, he said, “I’m not even a runner but I thought I’d give it a go for her and I know a lot of people and luckily people have been so generous.” Though he found the cumulative daily runs challenging, especially in the heat, his fitness helped him manage the physical strain with only minor discomfort.
Ewan expressed her immense gratitude for Richards’ generosity, remarking that while she has many items on her bucket list, traveling to Australia was something she believed would require both time and money she might not have. She was pleasantly surprised by the support, especially since they had not met before. Joining Richards for the final stretch in Yeovil, she shared her excitement, saying she “cannot wait to see koala bears in real life.” This heartfelt story highlights how compassion and determination can come together to create hope and joy in difficult circumstances
