An Irish government aircraft has been dispatched to the United Arab Emirates as part of an operation to extradite Daniel Kinahan, a suspected crime boss. Kinahan was detained in Dubai following an Irish court warrant issued in April, though he has resisted efforts to be extradited. Despite his legal challenges, which have so far been unsuccessful, reports from Irish broadcaster RTÉ indicate that Kinahan is expected to be flown back to Ireland on Sunday. Upon arrival, he will be brought before the Special Criminal Court in Dublin.
To ensure security during his return, a significant security presence will be established, according to RTÉ. Additionally, the prison service has enhanced the maximum-security facilities at Portlaoise Prison in preparation for his detention. Kinahan was sanctioned by the US government in April 2022, along with other family members, for their leadership roles in the Kinahan organised crime cartel. Aside from his criminal notoriety, Kinahan had connections to the sporting world through his now-defunct boxing management company, MTK Global, which represented prominent fighters such as Tyson Fury and Carl Frampton.
Irish authorities intend to charge Kinahan with leading an organised crime group. There is an existing extradition treaty between Ireland and the UAE, which was previously utilized to extradite Sean McGovern, described as a “senior lieutenant” within the same crime group. McGovern received a 24-year prison sentence in June for directing criminal organisation activities.
The cartel, which has been active for more than twenty years, has been involved in trafficking large quantities of drugs and firearms internationally, according to the National Crime Agency (NCA). The NCA also links the group to over twelve gangland murders. The US Treasury Department classifies the Kinahan cartel among the world’s most dangerous criminal organisations, likening it to Italy’s Camorra, Mexico’s Los Zetas, and Japan’s Yakuza. Furthermore, the US has offered a reward of up to $5 million (£3.84m) for information leading to the capture of the cartel’s three most senior members: Daniel Kinahan, his father Christopher Sr., and brother Christopher Jr. Former Garda Commissioner Drew Harris estimates that the gang has generated more than €1 billion (£836.59 million) globally through its operations.
In 2022, Thomas Kavanagh, who the NCA stated was responsible for running the group’s criminal activities in the UK, was sentenced to 21 years in prison. Alongside him, Gary Vickery and Daniel Canning received sentences of 20 years and 19 and a half years, respectively. The NCA reported that evidence linked them to cocaine imports valued up to £23.4 million and cannabis imports worth approximately £6.4 million.
