A man has been formally charged in connection with the fatal hit-and-run incident involving schoolboy Keaton Slater in Coventry, which occurred over two years ago. Dolars Aleksanders, aged 23, was apprehended after being extradited from Latvia, where he had been detained last month. West Midlands Police confirmed on Wednesday night that he faces charges of causing death by dangerous driving.
After arriving in the UK, Aleksanders was taken into police custody and is scheduled to appear before Birmingham Magistrates Court on Thursday. The tragic event took place on June 14, 2024, when 12-year-old Keaton was struck by a black BMW while walking home from school.
Efforts to secure Aleksanders’ extradition commenced soon after authorities identified him as a person of interest following the collision. Upon his return to the UK, he was flown into Gatwick Airport and then transported to a custody facility in the West Midlands, according to police reports.
Ben Samples, a spokesperson for the Crown Prosecution Service, highlighted the collaborative efforts between the British and Latvian authorities, alongside international agencies. He stated that these combined actions were instrumental in ensuring that “Mr Aleksanders [was brought] back to face proceedings in a UK court.
