To celebrate Prince George’s 13th birthday, Kensington Palace released a new portrait of the young royal. In the image, George is dressed in a dark suit paired with an open-necked white shirt, standing with his hands casually in his pockets. Accompanying the photo on social media was a cheerful message saying, “Happy 13th birthday, George!” along with a party popper emoji. This photograph was captured last month at Kensington Palace shortly after the Trooping the Colour ceremony by photographer Matt Porteous.
Prince George, who is the eldest child of the Prince and Princess of Wales, holds the position of second in line to the British throne. This year’s official birthday photo portrays a more formal and polished look compared to last year’s photograph, which featured a countryside backdrop and showed him wearing a casual gilet and a friendship bracelet while spending time in Norfolk. The updated style reflects George’s transition into his teenage years as he prepares to begin secondary school in the autumn.
Following in the footsteps of his father, Prince William, George is set to attend Eton College, a prestigious private boarding school usually starting at age 13. Prince William spoke about his enjoyment of attending Eton when he was 18, noting the school’s proximity to the family’s residence on the Windsor estate. George’s attendance continues a family tradition, as his uncle Prince Harry and great uncle Earl Spencer also studied there.
As he embarks on this new educational chapter, George will become a boarder in one of Eton’s 25 boarding houses, each housing around 55 pupils and overseen by a house master along with residential staff. Until now, George has been a student at Lambrook School in Berkshire alongside his siblings Charlotte and Louis. Although starting secondary school is a considerable change for any young person, Prince George’s upbringing has been shaped by a desire from his parents, Prince William and Catherine, to maintain as normal a family life as possible while still living under public scrutiny.
