Firefighters have managed to encircle a significant wildfire in the Cairngorms after several days of intense efforts to control the blaze. The fire originated near Ryvoan Bothy, south of Nethy Bridge, and prompted the evacuation of local residents while a force of more than 100 firefighters worked to extinguish it. On Sunday, police began escorting evacuees back to their homes and campsites to retrieve their belongings.
The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) reported considerable progress in managing the fire, largely aided by favorable weather conditions. Low winds and rainfall on Saturday allowed emergency teams to make substantial headway in dousing large parts of the affected six square kilometre area. Forestry Scotland supported the operation by giving crews permission to deploy drones for aerial assessment of the fire zone, enhancing situational awareness.
Additional resources played a key role in firefighting efforts, including a high-volume pump that drew water from Loch Morlich. The Cairngorms National Park Authority (CNPA) expressed growing optimism regarding the containment of the blaze due to the determined efforts of responders on the ground. Despite this, the incident remains ongoing, with road closures maintained until the operation concludes. The public continues to be advised to avoid Glenmore, Abernethy, Loch Morlich, and nearby locations. Earlier precautions had seen evacuations of homes, campsites, and a ski resort in Glenmore Forest Park.
Specialist equipment such as all-terrain vehicles remains deployed at the scene, with six fire appliances in action. Aerial firefighting techniques, including helicopters conducting water bombing, have been crucial in targeting zones that ground crews cannot easily access. Gavin Miles, CNPA’s director of planning and place, noted that surrounding areas will likely remain restricted for some time. He remarked, “The SFRS has indicated that the fire is now largely surrounded. This is, though, still a live situation and teams are still very active on the ground, so we are taking nothing for granted at this stage.” He also expressed gratitude for the ongoing dedication of those combating the fire and the cooperation from residents, visitors, and local businesses during this challenging period.
