Liverpool’s Minton Masterpiece unveiled for extended period

St George’s Hall has recently reopened the stunning Minton tile floor for an extended period, running from 17 July to 2 September 2026. Typically hidden beneath wooden panels to protect its exquisite detailing, the floor is recognized as one of the world’s premier examples of Victorian artistry. This intricate mosaic is composed of 30,000 individually handcrafted tiles that have drawn admiration from countless visitors over the years, thanks to its vivid colors, classical designs, and extraordinary state of preservation.

Following its popular 2023 reveal, which attracted over 20,000 guests nationwide, the 2026 showcase features an expanded programme designed to engage a broader audience. Attendees can experience immersive tours, participate in creative workshops, and enjoy performances from local musicians, including Brad Kella, the winner of Channel 4’s *The Piano*. Additionally, a new archival exhibition hosted in the Stable Gallery in collaboration with Liverpool Central Library offers insight into the rich history of St George’s Hall, highlighting the legacy of its first official organist, W. T. Best. Notably, this year also marks the introduction of a ramp to enhance accessibility, allowing wheelchair users to access the floor directly.

Proceeds from all ticket sales are dedicated to supporting the maintenance of St George’s Hall and contribute to the efforts of the St George’s Hall Charitable Trust. This organization is committed to preserving the building for future generations, as well as aiding in the restoration of the historic Willis Organ housed within the hall.

Liverpool City Council’s Cabinet Member for Health, Wellbeing and Culture, Councillor Harry Doyle, emphasized the significance of this cultural asset: “The Minton floor is one of Liverpool’s treasured hidden gems and the programme reflects everything St George’s Hall represents – heritage, creativity and community. The eclectic event programme highlights how cultural spaces can be used to inspire, educate and connect people. Every visitor who buys a ticket indirectly becomes a custodian of this amazing place, ensuring it can be enjoyed for generations to come.” Angie Redhead, Head of Operations at Culture Liverpool, also expressed enthusiasm for the event, stating, “St George’s Hall has many amazing features, but the Minton floor is the one that truly takes people’s breath away. This extended summer reveal gives visitors more time than ever to enjoy it, alongside an event programme that has something for everyone to enjoy from music to mindfulness and from history to Yoga. And I love that Brad Kella is as excited as we are to perform in our beautiful Concert Room.”
