Suffolk MP Patrick Spencer arrives at court for sexual assault trial

Patrick Spencer, a father of two and the son of billionaire businessman and Conservative peer Michael Spencer, is currently facing legal proceedings. Under UK parliamentary rules, any Member of Parliament sentenced to prison for one year or longer automatically loses their seat, unless they successfully appeal the conviction. If the custodial sentence handed down is shorter than a year, a recall petition may be initiated in the MP’s constituency.

Upon Spencer’s charge, Frank Ferguson from the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) stated that after reviewing evidence provided by the Metropolitan Police Service, charges were authorized against Spencer for two counts of sexual assault. These charges stem from two separate allegations made by different women, both reportedly involving incidents at the Groucho Club in central London during August 2023.

Ferguson emphasized the seriousness of the ongoing criminal process, reminding everyone that Spencer is entitled to a fair trial. He also warned against any reporting, commentary, or sharing of information online that could potentially influence or prejudice the judicial proceedings.

The Groucho Club, where the alleged events took place, is a private members’ club located on Dean Street in Soho.
