A black Labrador named Tokyo was rescued from Ben Nevis after showing signs of severe illness, believed to be caused by ingesting discarded cannabis. The incident occurred while Christina Bluhme, a dog trainer from Esher, Surrey, was hiking halfway up the UK’s tallest mountain. Tokyo suddenly collapsed on the trail, unable to move properly, which initiated a swift rescue effort.
The Lochaber Mountain Rescue Team responded promptly and carried Tokyo down the 4,413ft (1,345m) peak using a stretcher. Tokyo was then transported to a veterinary clinic in Fort William for urgent care. The vets concluded that the dog likely became unwell after consuming cannabis remnants found on the mountain path. During the ordeal, Tokyo lost the use of her legs and slipped in and out of consciousness, worrying her owner deeply.
Bluhme expressed her gratitude to the rescue team, emphasizing how critical their support was during a frightening experience. She remarked, “I genuinely thought I was going to lose her.” She explained that Tokyo remained unconscious for a large part of the descent and acknowledged the rescue team’s professionalism and kindness. “Without the incredible Lochaber Mountain Rescue Team, there is simply no way I could have got her safely off the mountain. Carrying a 25kg Labrador down Ben Nevis was impossible on my own,” she said.
Thankfully, Tokyo made a full recovery by the next day after being cared for by Crown Vets in Fort William. Bluhme thanked both the rescue workers and veterinary staff for their compassion and dedication. She also issued a warning to fellow dog owners to be vigilant, noting that “discarded drugs and other toxic substances can sometimes be found even in the most beautiful outdoor places.” The Lochaber Mountain Rescue Team shared their relief at Tokyo’s recovery and extended thanks to the vet team for their assistance.
