The most recent data on baby names in England and Wales for 2025 has been published, revealing some notable changes in popularity. For girls, Olivia continues to be the favorite name for the tenth consecutive year, while Lily has risen to second place, overtaking Amelia, which has dropped to third. On the boys’ side, Muhammad remains the most popular choice for the third year running, followed by Noah in second place and Leo now in third.

This information comes from the Office for National Statistics (ONS), which compiles baby name rankings based on birth registration data from the previous full calendar year. Aside from the top three girls’ names, other popular choices include Isla at fourth, followed by Florence, Freya, Poppy, Elsie, Ivy, and a new entrant, Isabella. For boys, the top ten also features Luca in fourth place, with Arthur, Oliver, George, Oscar, Theodore, and Freddie completing the list.

In terms of the number of babies given these names, 2,386 girls were named Olivia, while Lily and Amelia were chosen for 2,249 and 2,153 respectively. Muhammad was given to 5,957 boys, with alternative spellings also appearing in the top 100: Mohammed ranked 20th with 1,712 occurrences, and Mohammad was 55th with 895. Noah and Leo had 4,075 and 3,278 registrations respectively.

The report also highlights new entrants to the top 100 lists: Eliana, Gracie, Alba, and Lilah for girls, and Carter, Ruben, Stanley, and Vincent for boys. Meanwhile, some names have fallen out of favor, including Ellie, Amelie, and Jessica for girls, as well as Grayson, Brody, and Bodhi for boys. Among rising names, Ada saw a significant jump, moving up 54 places to 45th for girls, while Roman experienced the largest gain for boys, climbing 33 places to 27th. Monthly trends show some variation for girls’ names, with Olivia leading most months, but Isla, Lily, Amelia, and Florence taking the top spot during others.
