Liverpool City Council is preparing to approve a significant £12 million project aimed at enhancing safety and accessibility along a crucial corridor in the city. The improvements will span over 2 kilometers of Vauxhall Road and Commercial Road, with plans set to be discussed at the upcoming Cabinet meeting. The council intends to appoint a contractor to implement this comprehensive upgrade package.
Key elements of the scheme focus on active travel and pedestrian safety, featuring a fully segregated cycle lane, refurbished footpaths, and new pedestrian crossings at several busy intersections such as Leeds Street, Burlington Street, Boundary Street, and Sandhills Lane. Additionally, the entire carriageway will receive resurfacing, offering smoother conditions for all users of the road.
This initiative is designed to make journeys safer and more reliable for people walking, cycling, and wheeling, while also optimizing the road’s layout for everyone. Reducing traffic collisions stands as a primary goal of the project, which has gained strong support from the local community since initial proposals were presented in September 2024. Approximately 81 percent of respondents endorsed the plans, which have been refined and are now ready to move forward, pending official approval.
The improvements form part of the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority’s Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan, which aims to establish a network of high-quality active travel routes throughout the region. Funding for the project will be partially provided by Active Travel England, with work anticipated to commence this autumn if given the green light. Councillor Dan Barrington, Cabinet Member for Transport and Connectivity, emphasized the benefits, stating: “These works will create accessible, high-quality routes for everyone who travels through this part of the city. By giving people safe, dedicated space for walking, wheeling and cycling, we’re making it easier for residents to choose active travel when it suits them. And for those who continue to travel by car, better-designed junctions, clearer crossings and fully segregated cycle lanes mean safer, more predictable journeys for all road users.”
