Dad murdered newborn son after drinking nine pints on night out

A man has been found guilty of fatally injuring his four-week-old son after a night out. Tony Bartlett was convicted by a jury for causing the fatal harm to his infant son, Atticus, at their home in Chard, Somerset, on 16 July 2022. It was revealed during the trial that Bartlett, aged 39, had consumed up to nine pints of beer prior to the incident.

Atticus suffered critical injuries, including severe damage to his spinal cord and ribs, alongside brain trauma so extensive that he never regained consciousness or the ability to breathe without assistance. Despite medical efforts, the baby passed away seven days later.

Bartlett, who resides in Axminster, Devon, is due to be sentenced at Bristol Crown Court on 24 July. Throughout the trial, jurors learned that Bartlett and his then-partner, Evelyn Ballentyne, had spent the evening visiting a pub and a comedy club, marking their first night out since the birth of their son.

Upon returning home, Ballentyne went upstairs, leaving Bartlett alone with Atticus. When she came back, she discovered their son was “lifeless” and taking his final breaths without assistance. Emergency responders were called, and Atticus was initially admitted to Musgrove Park Hospital before being moved to Bristol Royal Hospital for Children, where he died shortly before midnight on 23 July 2022
