The Prince of Wales made a notable appearance at London’s Guildhall for an event focused on addressing climate change and environmental protection, arriving in an electric bus to underline the theme. Despite soaring temperatures, Prince William spoke passionately to attendees, including London Mayor Sir Sadiq Khan, about the urgent need to “repair” the planet.
Highlighting the progress of his Earthshot Prize initiative, the Prince expressed that the innovative solutions emerging from the prize had made him feel “more optimistic than ever.” He emphasized the importance of using evidence-based approaches to environmental protection, warning that future generations will judge us by how we acted once effective solutions were identified. The Earthshot Prize, launched in 2020, is a decade-long program providing £1 million annually to five winners who present groundbreaking ideas to save the planet.
At the event’s midpoint, Prince William shared some significant outcomes from the award-winning projects. These included a reduction in emissions equivalent to removing four million cars from the roads, with 18 million tonnes of emissions cut. Additionally, 85 million hectares of land, forests, and rivers have been “protected, restored and improved.” Looking ahead, future projects aim to enhance battery life for green energy, promote climate-resilient farming methods in India, and develop sustainable dyes for the fashion industry.
The gathering acknowledged the efforts of Khan’s administration in demonstrating how a major city can successfully reduce vehicle emissions. Khan discussed the detrimental health effects caused by air pollution and praised the Prince’s dedication, describing William’s commitment as “authentic… he really believes in this stuff.” Conservationist and TV presenter Robert Irwin highlighted the necessity of balancing “urgency and optimism” in environmental efforts. Earthshot Prize CEO Jason Knauf acknowledged that optimism might feel “jarring” amid political disagreements but stressed that “despair and defeatism are mindsets we cannot afford.” Prince William reiterated that while the challenge can seem overwhelming, concrete ideas exist to tackle it and called on everyone to consider their legacy, asking, “When we saw forests being restored, did we help restoration spread? When we saw clean air policies working, did we help other cities follow?”
