Authorities have arrested one individual in connection with the attack, who is currently in custody as investigations continue.

Local officials have condemned the violence, with Justice Minister Naomi Long commending the “brave people who disarmed the attacker.” She also urged the public to refrain from sharing graphic images and videos of the assault, describing them as “deeply disturbing and traumatising to view.” Meanwhile, Deputy First Minister Emma Little-Pengelly called the event a “shocking and brutal act of violence,” emphasizing that such hatred “has no place in our society,” nor on Northern Ireland’s streets. She stressed the importance of safety within communities and expressed zero tolerance for this level of brutality.

The Northern Ireland Ambulance Service dispatched an emergency ambulance and an advanced paramedic to provide initial treatment at the scene. The injured man was subsequently transported to the Royal Victoria Hospital for further medical care. Sinn Féin MP John Finucane described the attack as “appalling” and reiterated that “there is no place for violence of any kind in our communities.”

Residents in the area have been deeply affected by the event. McCusker praised the courageous actions of local people who intervened during the assault, stating, “I’ve never seen an attack like this happen on the streets of north Belfast.” He called on the community to support the police investigation while also providing assistance to those impacted, including the victim’s family and eyewitnesses. Adding to the condemnation, Ulster Unionist Party leader Jon Burrows labeled the stabbing a “barbaric attack” that has “caused shock across not only Northern Ireland but the entire United Kingdom.
