Glanaman man saves neighbours after lightning strikes roof and fire spreads

A lightning strike caused a house fire in Glanaman, Carmarthenshire, prompting a swift response from a nearby resident who urgently alerted the occupants. Stuart Dunn, a primary school teacher, quickly realized the danger when he saw flames on the roof of his neighbour’s property late at night. The owner was asleep downstairs with her dog and unaware that the fire was spreading above her.

Upon spotting the fire, Dunn rushed across the street and forcefully knocked on the door of the affected house to wake the resident, who appeared shocked by the unfolding situation. Noticing the woman living next door had not yet evacuated, Dunn then tried to alert her by shining a torch through an upstairs window. The neighbour, who was wearing an eye mask and ear plugs, had not been disturbed by the thunderstorm or the fire until Dunn’s efforts woke her.

The incident took place around 23:20 BST on 27 May, when the Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service received an emergency call and dispatched crews to the semi-detached property. The fire, ignited by a lightning strike captured on video by another resident, caused significant damage, including a large hole in the roof. Smoke quickly filled the area, leading most residents to leave their homes, while authorities from Dyfed-Powys Police, ambulance services, and the National Grid also responded.

Despite the extent of the damage and the fire spreading to a neighbouring property, all residents were accounted for, and no injuries were reported. Firefighters remained on the scene until shortly before 03:00 BST on 28 May. Dunn, who has lived locally for eight years, expressed that his reaction was not heroic but a natural instinct to help neighbours in need. The grateful neighbour later left a thank-you card to acknowledge his assistance during the dramatic night
