Sheffield Reform UK councillor 'brought party into disrepute'

Nathaniel Menday, who recently won a seat representing the Woodhouse ward on Sheffield City Council, has been suspended by the Reform UK party amid an ongoing investigation. The suspension follows the revelation of social media posts linked to Menday that have caused significant controversy and are alleged to have tarnished the party’s reputation.

Reports indicate that Menday shared content on the platform X that included images of a Nazi flag bearing a swastika and a photograph of Hitler’s Mein Kampf. Additionally, he is said to have made disparaging remarks suggesting that the UK harbors a “subhuman underclass.” These posts have raised serious concerns within Reform UK, prompting swift action from party officials.

A spokesperson for Reform UK stated that Menday’s suspension resulted from his failure to disclose these posts during the candidate vetting process. The party made it clear that it does not endorse the views expressed in the controversial material. Attempts by the BBC to contact Menday for further comment have not yielded a response.

Before the election, Menday secured 1,987 votes, winning by a margin exceeding 1,000 votes over Labour candidate Danny Allsebrook. In the lead-up to the vote, The Times highlighted various social media posts from Menday, where he reportedly encouraged white supremacist symbolism and suggested that “Jewish people in the West” were responsible for antisemitism due to their preference for open borders. Menday defended himself in an interview with the paper, stating that he enjoys “risky humour and pushing boundaries” and denies being antisemitic or sympathetic to Nazi ideology. He also acknowledged having “flirted with what could reasonably be referred to as ‘far-right ideology'” but claimed to have ultimately rejected its fundamental principles. Expressing his motivation, Menday said, “I am passionate about my country but I am and always have been motivated by love, not hate.”

Further reports from the Sheffield Star revealed additional posts from a now-deleted X account, including one where Menday compared the UK unfavorably to continental Europe and described a “disgusting, almost subhuman underclass of people bringing the place down.” Reform UK reiterated its stance in a statement, confirming Menday’s suspension pending the investigation and emphasizing that such comments are not supported by the party. No timeframe has been given for when the inquiry will conclude
