Police have confirmed the identity of a teenager who tragically lost his life in a river incident shortly after celebrating his 18th birthday. Benjamin Glen, who was from Dumfries, encountered difficulties while in the River Nith, located in his hometown. Emergency services were alerted around 18:50 on Thursday following reports of a person in the water near the Kingholm Road area. Despite efforts, his body was recovered from the river.
Authorities have stated that Benjamin’s death is not being treated as suspicious, and a report will be forwarded to the procurator fiscal. Multiple agencies participated in the search and rescue operation, including coastguard rescue teams from Dumfries, Portling, and Annan, as well as the Nith Inshore Rescue lifeboat. Police Scotland, the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS), and the Scottish Ambulance Service (SAS) also responded to the emergency.
Dumfries and Galloway Council noted that Benjamin was a former student at a local school in the region. A spokesperson expressed condolences, saying, “This is a sad day for Dumfries and Galloway. Our thoughts are with the family and friends at this very tragic time.” The council emphasized that measures are in place to support both young people and staff, prioritizing their wellbeing during this difficult period.
SFRS area commander Derek Heaton confirmed that two fire appliances and specialized water rescue units were dispatched to the scene, though Benjamin was pronounced dead there. He said, “Our thoughts are very much with his family, friends and the wider community at this difficult time.” The ambulance service mentioned that it sent two ambulances to the site, and a woman was taken to Dumfries Infirmary for treatment. The incident took place on one of the hottest days recorded so far this year in an area frequented by dog walkers, joggers, and cyclists.
