The driver involved in the tragic car crash on the grounds of a south-west London school in 2023, which resulted in the deaths of two eight-year-old girls, has now been formally charged by prosecutors. Claire Freemantle was driving a Land Rover that breached the railings surrounding The Study Preparatory School in Wimbledon during a celebration marking the last day of term. At the time, pupils and their parents were gathered on the lawn.
The collision tragically claimed the lives of Selena Lau and Nuria Sajjad, while several others sustained injuries. Freemantle, aged 48, faces two charges of causing death by dangerous driving along with seven charges related to causing serious injury by dangerous driving.
In response, the families of the two young victims issued a statement expressing that this development brings them closer to uncovering the reasons behind the devastating loss of their children. They reflected on how their lives were shattered by the incident on 6 July 2023 and the immense suffering endured over nearly three years. After initially rejecting the Crown Prosecution Service’s decision not to proceed with charges in June 2024—due to doubts about whether all facts had been fully considered—they have since seen their challenge vindicated by a reopened investigation and the uncovering of substantial new evidence.
The statement conveyed the families’ long-standing call for truth and accountability, describing years filled with grief and the struggle to gain clarity. With the decision to charge Freemantle, the case will move forward to trial, marking a significant step toward understanding why Nuria and Selena lost their lives and why others were hurt.
Following the initial Metropolitan Police investigation that concluded in June 2024 without charges—citing an undiagnosed epileptic seizure as the cause of the crash—Freemantle expressed deep sorrow but stated she had no memory of the event. However, the girls’ parents criticized the police inquiry as flawed, which led to the investigation being reopened later that year with fresh lines of enquiry. Subsequently, Freemantle was re-arrested in January 2025 on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.
Nearly three years after the fatal accident, the families will finally have the chance to confront the driver responsible in court. Both Nuria Sajjad and Selena Lau’s families shared fond memories of the girls: Nuria was remembered as a bright, spirited child full of enthusiasm for life and future plans, while Selena was described as intelligent, cheeky, and deeply loved by those around her.
