Essa Suleiman, a 45-year-old man, has appeared in court facing charges of attempted murder following an attack in Golders Green, north London, where two Jewish men were stabbed on Wednesday. The victims, Shloime Rand, aged 34, and Moshe Shine, aged 76, sustained serious injuries and required hospital treatment. The Metropolitan Police have classified the attack as a terrorist incident.
In addition to the Golders Green attack, Suleiman is accused of attempting to murder Ishmail Hussein in an earlier knife attack at Hussein’s flat in Southwark, south London, on the same day. Hussein is reported to have known Suleiman for about 20 years. Suleiman also faces a charge related to possessing a knife in a public place in Golders Green.
During the hearing, Suleiman appeared wearing a grey sweatshirt and trousers issued by the police and showed signs of bruising around his eyes. He confirmed his name and date of birth to the court. Legal constraints prevent revealing the precise location of Suleiman’s residence, which is supported housing for mental health patients in south London. It is noted that he had been receiving care from the South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust.
Born in Somalia, Suleiman legally entered the UK as a child in the early 1990s and holds British citizenship. His case has been transferred to the Old Bailey, where he is scheduled to have a preliminary hearing on 15 May. Suleiman remains in custody. Following the stabbing attacks, the UK’s terror threat level was escalated to severe on Thursday, with the government stating the heightened threat was due to a longer-term upward trend rather than this single incident alone
