A woman in her 30s has been taken into custody in connection with the death of Nyla May Bradshaw, a seven-year-old girl who was discovered in a pond in Doncaster. Nyla was brought to a park in the Owston area on the morning of 30 March and was reported missing shortly afterward. Tragically, she was later found face down and unresponsive in a pond located within the grounds of Owston Hall Hotel. She was pronounced dead at Doncaster Royal Infirmary at 13:18 BST on the same day.
Initially, police investigations suggested there was no suspicious activity surrounding Nyla’s death. However, ongoing inquiries led South Yorkshire Police to arrest the woman on suspicion of gross negligence manslaughter and child neglect. She has since been released on bail as further investigations continue. Detective Chief Inspector Gary Magnay expressed the deep emotional toll Nyla’s loss has had, both on her immediate family and the wider community. “The heartbreaking loss of Nyla May has had a huge emotional impact – not just on her family, friends and loved ones, but on the wider community,” he said.
Nyla, who was non-verbal and autistic, had been under the supervision of a childminder when she apparently slipped through a hole in a fence and made her way toward nearby woodland. Authorities conducted extensive searches using drones and a police aircraft before finding her in the pond. The investigation remains active, and Det Ch Insp Magnay reiterated the need for public discretion, urging people not to speculate and to respect the privacy of those affected. “The proceedings in this case are now active, which means nothing must be published by anyone, including members of the public, which could threaten the integrity of any future court proceedings,” he added.
Family friend Charlotte Cooper spoke warmly about Nyla, describing her as “full of light and amazing energy.” Cooper remarked, “Nyla was the sweetest girl I ever got the privilege to hold and take care of… She was just magical, never sad, always in Nyla’s world.” Nyla’s family has been supported throughout this difficult time, reflecting the community’s shared grief.
