Fifty years ago, a significant milestone in football history was set by a non-league club that introduced shirt sponsorship for the first time. Kettering Town, also known as the Poppies, inadvertently laid the foundation for an industry now valued in the hundreds of millions when they displayed “Kettering Tyres” on their shirts on January 24, 1976. This move marked the beginning of commercial sponsorship in football attire.

The club from Northamptonshire plans to honor this landmark event by donning a replica of the historic shirt during their upcoming match against Halesowen Town on Saturday. The original celebrations scheduled for January had to be postponed due to poor weather conditions, but the club has arranged other commemorative activities to acknowledge both the past and its vibrant current status. They described the occasion as an opportunity to reflect on “a defining moment from the past, but also the vibrant present and future of the club.”

Derek Dougan, who was the player-manager and also managed business affairs for Kettering Town at the time, was instrumental in securing a £4,000 sponsorship deal. Reflecting on the process, Dougan once explained in an interview with the Sports Argus how difficult it was to find a new sponsor for every home game, calling it “hopelessly time-consuming.” He then decided it would be better to involve just one sponsor consistently. Upon seeing the potential with Kettering Tyres, whose initials KT conveniently matched the club’s, he realized he had “made a breakthrough” when they agreed to the arrangement.

Despite initial backlash, including threats of fines and bans for the club, the Football Association revised its regulations within 18 months to permit shirt sponsorship. On the day of the anniversary match, former players from the 1976 team will be present to take part in various commemorations such as a pre-match walkout and a post-match auction of the replica shirts, marking the enduring legacy of that pioneering sponsorship deal
