Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar has made revitalizing the NHS the focal point of his campaign ahead of the upcoming Holyrood election. At an event in Edinburgh, he outlined his party’s commitment to ending the early morning scramble for GP appointments, reducing waiting times, and cutting through the red tape that hampers the healthcare system. Sarwar framed the election as a clear choice for voters: either “more of the same with the SNP or change with Scottish Labour.”
Addressing concerns about the SNP’s nearly two decades in power, Sarwar criticized the current administration for having “lost their way,” emphasizing the need for fresh leadership. Drawing on his own background as a former dentist, he described the pledge to improve NHS services as deeply personal. The Scottish Labour manifesto proposes negotiating a new GP contract to increase appointment availability, utilizing spare NHS capacity across Scotland and the UK to shorten waits, and reorganizing health board structures by reducing them from 14 to just three to streamline administration.
Beyond healthcare, Sarwar highlighted additional promises, including the introduction of an NHS app, deploying AI scanners in hospitals, and launching new screening programs. His party also plans to establish an emergency mental health response service and place mental health support workers in GP practices. Addressing economic challenges, Sarwar pledged a £100 million emergency package to support households and energy-intensive industries if energy prices continue to escalate due to global tensions. This package would include loans, bulk fuel purchasing to reduce costs, and crisis grants.
In his broader vision, Sarwar spoke of making Scotland more affordable and prosperous for families, ensuring young people have opportunities to succeed, tackling homelessness once and for all, investing in housing, and improving infrastructure. He vowed to overhaul planning processes, improve energy efficiency in homes, and hold supermarkets accountable to lower food costs through an emergency summit.
