Behind the scenes of The Purpose Pioneers podcast

At Positive News, managing multiple roles within a small team is a daily reality. This brings a mix of benefits, such as variety, independence, and opportunities to explore projects that might be out of reach in larger organisations. However, every new initiative must also prove its worth before moving forward. When the idea of launching a video podcast came up, the team embraced it with enthusiasm but also with careful consideration.

Supported by Triodos Bank, the team began to define what the Positive News podcast would stand for—and equally what it would avoid. They steered clear of creating another polished leadership series or a how-to guide for ethical business. Instead, the aim was to produce candid, thoughtful conversations with individuals dedicated to aligning their work with a sense of purpose, recognizing the inherent complexities involved in this endeavour.

The concept that emerged focused on interviews with leaders who are transforming business, community, and culture. These dialogues concentrate less on resumes and more on the pivotal moments that have shaped their paths—highlighting not only triumphs but also doubts, dilemmas, and crucial turning points that tend to be absent from public accounts. After a few months of development, The Purpose Pioneers podcast was launched and is now accessible across YouTube, Spotify, and Apple Podcasts, with new episodes released weekly.

Reflecting on the production process, several key insights stood out. Firstly, simplicity in structure enhanced the quality of conversations. The team experimented with various complex interview formats but found that a minimalistic approach worked best. Each episode was framed around three defining experiences: the moment the guest’s journey began, the point when they recognized the impact of their efforts, and their outlook for the future. This format provided enough guidance to focus the discussions while allowing guests the freedom to express themselves naturally. A memorable instance came from Stephanie Wheen, founder of Gympanzees, who shared the moving experience of witnessing a child with complex needs laugh for the first time—a moment that captured the intent of the podcast perfectly.

Recording all interviews remotely introduced its own unique dynamics. Using a straightforward home recording setup and filming with a phone’s outward-facing camera, the host could not see guests during conversations. Initially uncomfortable, this arrangement eventually proved freeing, enabling deeper listening and more instinctive responses while embracing the natural flow of silence. The final element that shaped The Purpose Pioneers was the upfront establishment of a candid atmosphere with guests. By clearly communicating the intent for open, personal conversations—covering challenges, motivation, and moments of vulnerability—the podcast was able to engage guests authentically, even those in positions of power. A recurring theme across episodes was how guests managed pressure through activities in nature, such as surfing, rock climbing, or simply listening to birdsong, highlighting small yet crucial ways to maintain balance amidst ambitious work.

The Purpose Pioneers podcast is now available on all major platforms, offering a window into the personal journeys of individuals striving to turn ideals into meaningful action
