Freshone Ltd., the company managing Best In Late Shop on Atwell Street, has been ordered to pay fines totaling over £13,000 after admitting to violating food hygiene regulations. Liverpool City Council prosecuted the business last week (27 November) at Liverpool Magistrates Court for multiple breaches related to food safety and cleanliness standards.
The initial investigation took place in October 2024 when Environmental Health Officers responded to a complaint about mice being seen in the store. Upon inspection, the officers discovered the premises were extensively infested with rodents. Various signs pointed to poor pest control measures, such as widespread mouse droppings found on food-display shelves and on the floor. Additionally, damaged food items—including crisps and chocolates—had been gnawed by mice, and a dead mouse was located beneath a freezer.
Due to the severity of these conditions, the court was informed that the shop was immediately closed because it posed an ‘imminent risk to health’. At that time, the store received the lowest possible food hygiene rating of zero. Following their guilty plea, Freshone Ltd. was fined £5,334, ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £2,000, and required to cover costs of £5,694.55 payable to the Council. While the shop was shut, it trapped more than 55 mice.
After significant improvements were made, a reinspection allowed Best In Late Shop to reopen. By May 2025, the store had been re-evaluated and was awarded the top food hygiene rating of five. Liverpool City Council’s Environmental Health team is responsible for administering the Food Hygiene Rating Scheme nationwide, offering the public access to ratings for most food businesses in the city via the official food safety website. Councillor Harry Doyle, Cabinet Member for Health, Wellbeing and Culture, commented on the situation, emphasizing the seriousness of food hygiene enforcement and praising the business for taking responsibility and improving conditions after the initial failures. He added that such incidents should be prevented by businesses strictly adhering to hygiene standards at all times
