A former footballer who represented England and played in the Premier League during the 2010s has been taken into custody on suspicion of attempted rape. The individual was apprehended at Stansted Airport, as reported by The Sun, but cannot be identified publicly due to legal restrictions.
According to a statement from Essex Police, the man was arrested on suspicion of attempted rape and has been granted bail until late February 2026 while the investigation continues. The arrest occurred after Border Force officers halted the individual at passport control as he was about to board a flight on Sunday.
The Sun revealed that police were seeking the suspect in connection with an allegation of attempted rape dating back some time. It was this outstanding warrant that led to the decision to stop him at the airport.
In the UK, it is uncommon for police to disclose the names of people arrested unless they have been formally charged.
