Sam Fender gives £25,000 Mercury Prize winnings to small music venues

Musician Sam Fender has made a generous donation of his £25,000 Mercury Prize winnings to the Music Venues Trust (MVT), a charity dedicated to preserving grassroots music venues in the UK. Fender, whose third album People Watching was awarded the prestigious prize, expressed his gratitude to the venues that supported him in the early stages of his career, recognizing their importance in shaping his success. “These venues are legendary, but they are struggling,” Fender emphasized, underscoring the critical role played by grassroots venues in nurturing emerging artists.

The donation from Fender comes at a time when the UK’s music scene is facing challenges, with over 150 venues permanently closing since the beginning of 2023, representing approximately 16% of the sector. To address this crisis, major artists like Pulp, Coldplay, Katy Perry, and Ed Sheeran have rallied behind the MVT by adding a small levy to their concert tickets, with proceeds directed toward supporting smaller music venues. Fender, too, has played his part by raising over £100,000 during his 2024 arena tour to aid 38 grassroots venues across England, Scotland, and Wales.

Notably, Fender is part of a tradition of Mercury Prize winners who have donated their winnings to charitable causes. Previous recipients like Pulp, Ms Dynamite, Ezra Collective, and M People have all contributed their prize money to various beneficial organizations, showcasing the altruistic spirit within the music industry. The recent efforts by the MVT have also been successful in saving two grassroots venues in south-east England, as the Joiners in Southampton and The Croft in Bristol were brought into community ownership through the Own Our Venues initiative, backed by Arts Council England and music enthusiasts who purchase “shares” in the properties.

Through his philanthropic gesture, Sam Fender not only highlights the importance of supporting grassroots music venues but also underscores the broader trend of artists giving back to the community that helped shape their careers. The collective efforts of musicians and organizations like MVT demonstrate a shared commitment to preserving the diversity and vibrancy of the UK’s music landscape, ensuring that emerging talent continues to find platforms for growth and development
