A massive crackdown led by the National Crime Agency (NCA) has resulted in over 920 arrests as targeted raids on shops including mini-marts, vape stores, barbers, and takeaways were carried out. More than 340 notices for illegal working and renting were issued, potentially resulting in hefty fines for businesses and landlords. An investigation by the BBC uncovered Kurdish crime fixers who claimed they could make fines for illegal working disappear, along with a criminal network using “ghost directors” to manage official paperwork for companies.
Undercover journalists posing as asylum seekers were shown how easy it is to take over a shop and profit from illegal tobacco sales. The Home Office has pledged to look into the BBC’s findings. The month-long crackdown involved visits to 2,734 high street premises, resulting in the seizure of over £10.7 million in criminal proceeds, including illegal tobacco and vapes, cash, and cannabis. The NCA estimates that alone, the illicit tobacco amounts to over £3.5 million worth of evaded duty.
Alarming figures suggest that around £12 billion of criminal cash is generated annually in the UK, often leaving the country or funneled through financial systems to fuel criminal activities. Concerns have been raised by senior politicians over a UK-wide criminal network identified by the BBC, contributing to illegal migration into the country. Additionally, a group of 25 Labour MPs, led by Melanie Onn, MP for Great Grimsby and Cleethorpes, has called for stricter penalties and new legislative powers to combat offenders operating in their constituencies.
Law enforcement agencies are intensifying efforts to tackle serious organized crimes operating through these illegal shops. Operation Machinize, launched by the NCA in response to reports of money laundering, has seen joint efforts by police forces across the UK, along with Trading Standards, HM Revenue & Customs, and Home Office Immigration Enforcement. The Chartered Trading Standards Institute (CSTI) has noted that serious organized crime is the biggest threat facing members, calling for enhanced resources and powers to shut down criminal operations effectively
