Dame Penny Mordaunt expressed her concerns of “sexual violence” from a man accused of stalking her, stating that his behavior was more alarming to her than threats of violence towards her and her family. Edward Brandt, 61, is facing charges of stalking with the intent to cause serious distress against the former MP for Portsmouth North. The court heard that Mr. Brandt sent numerous emails and phone messages to Dame Penny, even showing up at her office after hours in an attempt to meet her.
During her testimony at Southampton Crown Court, Dame Penny, 52, emotionally recounted her experiences with Mr. Brandt, stating that his pursuit of a “personal relationship” with her made her fear for her safety. The alleged incidents took place between September 11, 2023, and May 12, 2024. Despite being given a conditional caution and ordered not to contact Dame Penny, Mr. Brandt continued to leave voicemail messages and send emails expressing his desire to meet her.
Throughout her 14 years as a parliamentarian, Dame Penny has faced various threats and challenges, but she emphasized the difference with Mr. Brandt’s case, stating that his constant presence and lack of boundaries made him a real threat. She found his emails to be “creepy” but only became truly alarmed when he showed up at her office. The court heard that security measures had to be increased at Dame Penny’s office, including the installation of a panic alarm.
Gemma Freeman, Dame Penny’s office manager, revealed the impact that the stalking had on her, mentioning that it left her feeling uneasy and anxious in public spaces.
