Dame Jilly Cooper's death caused by head injury, says coroner

Dame Jilly Cooper tragically sustained a fatal head injury after falling at her Gloucestershire residence, as discovered during an inquest. The renowned author, famous for her passionate romantic novels like Riders and Rivals, was found by her family at her Bisley home around 17:00 BST on 4 October. Initially alert, Dame Jilly was taken to Gloucestershire Royal Hospital by paramedics, but her condition deteriorated rapidly, leading to her passing at 08:30 BST on 5 October with her family by her side.

Katy Skerrett, the senior coroner for Gloucestershire, determined Dame Jilly’s demise to be accidental, attributing it to a traumatic subdural haematoma. Despite being unable to provide details about the incident, it was believed that she fell down a flight of stairs due to a trail of blood found in that area of her residence. An urgent CT scan revealed a skull fracture, with medical experts concluding that the head injury was devastating and likely the cause of her death.

In a statement, the South Western Ambulance Service confirmed responding to the call at 5:35 BST on 4 October, arriving at Dame Jilly’s home about 20 minutes later. Dr. William Nattrass, her GP for approximately 14 years, recounted two previous falls she experienced in 2018 and September 2024. Despite mobility issues, Dame Jilly remained vibrant and engaging. The circumstances surrounding her untimely passing were deemed accidental, with no foul play suspected in the tragic incident.

Dame Jilly’s narrative works often delved into the scandals, romantic entanglements, and elite equestrian circles of the affluent countryside. Her novel Rivals even found success as a popular TV series featuring notable actors like David Tennant and Danny Dyer. Following her demise, Queen Camilla, a close companion of the author, hailed Dame Jilly as a legendary figure, underscoring the profound impact of her literary contributions
