Blaise Metreweli: MI6 distances new chief from Nazi grandfather

The new chief of MI6, Blaise Metreweli, has sparked controversy due to her grandfather’s past as a Nazi spy known as “the butcher”. Metreweli, who is set to become the first female head of the Secret Intelligence Service in its 116-year history, comes from a family background marred by conflict and division. Her grandfather, Constantine Dobrowolski, defected from the Soviet Red Army to work as the Nazis’ chief informant in Chernihiv, Ukraine.

Despite the revelations about her grandfather’s dark past, the Foreign Office on behalf of MI6 has clarified that Metreweli had no knowledge of her paternal grandfather and never met him. They attribute her Eastern European heritage, characterized by complexities and misunderstandings, to her dedication to preventing conflicts and safeguarding the British public from contemporary threats posed by hostile states.

According to reports from the Daily Mail, documents unearthed from an archive in Freiburg, Germany, shed light on Dobrowolski’s gruesome actions as a Nazi spy. Nicknamed “The Butcher” or “Agent No 30” by Wehrmacht commanders, Dobrowolski reportedly participated in the extermination of Jews, looted Holocaust victims’ bodies, and was involved in the murder of local Jews. Additional evidence suggests that he was on a most-wanted list compiled by the KGB, indicating his continued activities into the 1960s.

Following World War II, Dobrowolski’s widow and son, Constantine Jr, sought refuge in Britain. Constantine Jr later adopted his stepfather’s surname of Metreweli, though official documentation reveals his original surname as Dobrowolski. Metreweli’s daughter, Blaise, born in 1977, eventually joined MI6 in 1999 and has since climbed the ranks, specializing in technology and innovation. She is slated to take over as the 18th head of the agency later this year, succeeding Sir Richard Moore
