BBC correspondent Phil Mackie has reported from Algarve, Portugal, where searches for Madeleine McCann have resumed after 18 years since she disappeared from an apartment complex in Praia da Luz. Portuguese and German authorities are concentrating on abandoned buildings and wells in their search efforts. Madeleine was three years old when she vanished during a holiday with her parents in May 2007, triggering a widespread investigation.
The current search area, covering the municipality of Lagos near Praia da Luz, spans 21 sq km (8 sq miles) and will run until Friday. The focus is between where Madeleine disappeared and where the German investigators’ main suspect was located at the time. This suspect, Christian Brückner, a 48-year-old German national, is currently serving a sentence in Germany for the rape of a 72-year-old American tourist in Portugal in 2005. If he fails to pay a fine, his release could be delayed until early 2026.
The search area located around 3.5 miles from the Ocean Club resort, where the McCann family stayed, saw a significant presence of officials on Wednesday, with vehicles carrying uniformed and plainclothes individuals arriving on the scene. The attention was initially on an abandoned farm with numerous derelict buildings covered in graffiti. A white van and a large blue tent marked the base of operations on-site.
German authorities suspect Brückner of murder and are concerned that he may evade justice following his release. British authorities are treating the case as a missing person’s investigation. The current search in Portugal, spanning 21 plots of land, is being conducted under a European warrant approved by Portuguese prosecutors. There is no new information prompting this latest search, which appears to be a final search through potential evidence-hiding locations
