Over the weekend, wildfires continued to rage in parts of Scotland, including the Galloway hills. The blaze which started in the Glen Trool area of the Galloway Forest Park on Thursday spread to Loch Doon in East Ayrshire. Fortunately, the Scottish government announced on Sunday evening that the fire was “under control” after its resilience room meeting.
Meanwhile, in the Highlands, the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) has been battling a wildfire in Stac Pollaidh, located at Inverpolly Forest near Ullapool. Justice Secretary Angela Constance commended the emergency services for their hard work in containing the Galloway blaze. She expressed gratitude to the first responders and reassured that there had been no damage to properties or mature woodland.
Helicopters were deployed to water-bomb the fire over the weekend. Five groups of walkers were located on the hills on Friday night and were promptly moved away from the area for safety. Fire engines remained at the scene overnight on Sunday, with another dispatched on Monday morning. In the Highlands, five fire engines were on site on Monday, and the public has been advised to avoid the area as a precaution.
The rising temperatures across the UK have led to wildfire warnings being issued for several parts of the country. With the warm and dry weather persisting, the Scottish Wildfire Forum along with the SFRS are appealing to the public to refrain from lighting fires outdoors across all areas of Scotland. Ms. Constance emphasized the need for responsible behavior while enjoying the outdoors to minimize the occurrence of wildfires
