A dramatic turn of events unfolded in Hull as a man faces a total of 64 charges following an investigation into the operations of a funeral directors in the area. The investigation by Humberside Police led to the discovery of 35 bodies and a quantity of ashes that prompted further scrutiny into the practices of Legacy Independent Funeral Directors. The man at the center of the charges, Robert Bush, 47, residing in Kirk Ella, East Yorkshire, now faces a multitude of charges including fraud, theft, and preventing a lawful burial.
Robert Bush has been accused of 30 counts of preventing a lawful and decent burial, 30 counts of fraud by false representation, two counts of theft from charities, one count of general fraud, and one count of fraudulent trading. Despite the seriousness of the charges, Bush has been released on bail pending his court appearance at Hull Magistrates’ Court on 25th June. The investigation also extended to a 55-year-old woman who was initially arrested on suspicion of money laundering, but has since been released with no further action to be taken.
In a press conference held by Deputy Chief Constable Dave Marshall, it was revealed that a total of 254 victims were identified as part of the investigation. Of these victims, 172 were impacted by the fraudulent trading of funeral plans spanning from May 23, 2012, to March 6, 2024. Additionally, there were 50 victims affected by fraud relating to human ashes between August 1, 2017, and March 6, 2024. The authorities have been in contact with the families of the deceased individuals involved in the case. Personal outreach will also be made to additional victims affected by the investigation in the coming days
