A fusion of art and science is helping to draw attention to the global biodiversity crisis. An exhibition called Figures in Extinction 1.0 is based on the findings of Dutch marine biologist and oceanographer Dr Marcel G J Stive. Using data gathered over 40 years, Stive has predicted that figures of certain species will soon follow those of the dinosaur. Essentially, we are in the midst of a sixth mass extinction.

Participating artists, including the renowned Rahi Rezvani, explore the interconnections between humans and the natural world. Their works highlight the industrial impact on biodiversity through the lens of beauty, history, science and innovation.

Of the 1,000 plant and animal species that went extinct in the last 500 years, 500 disappeared in the last century, according to the project. The exhibition, which can be viewed in person or online, also includes talks and workshops, all aimed at fostering dialogue and potential solutions.

The show is produced by the ANNE+ Gallery, and was commissioned by the charitable arm of the Amsterdam-based digital platform, Contemporary Cultural Productions.
