A man, aged 72, recently made an appearance in a Belfast court after being listed on Interpol’s wanted list for alleged hate crime offenses in the United States. Liam Mackin, residing in Brookland Court in Dunmurry, has been accused of causing extensive graffiti damage to six properties in Flager County, Florida, amounting to several thousand dollars. Facing extradition to the US for trial, he was apprehended at Musgrave Police Station on the basis of an international arrest warrant.
Despite the grave accusations, Mr. Mackin, as asserted by his defense lawyers, vehemently refutes the allegations and does not consent to the extradition plea. During the brief court appearance, Mr. Mackin, assisted by a crutch, remained seated and did not address the court directly. The charges levied against him in the US could result in a maximum prison term of 14 years, as revealed during the hearing where the court was given a 65-day period to produce the necessary warrant.
The proceedings were adjourned until May by Judge Gilpin, who granted bail to Mr. Mackin subject to stringent conditions. Among these conditions, Mr. Mackin was mandated to relinquish his identification documents, remain at his specified residence in Northern Ireland, and report to the police on a weekly basis.
