The front pages of UK newspapers are dominated by the release of three hostages from Gaza as a ceasefire deal between Israel and Hamas came into force yesterday. British-Israeli citizen Emily Damari, who was taken by Hamas from her home on 7 October, was reunited with her mother. The Times reports that crowds of television cameras surrounded Emily, Doron Steinbrecher, 31, and Romi Gonen, 24, as they were handed over by Hamas to Red Cross officials. Meanwhile, hundreds of aid trucks queued to enter Gaza as the ceasefire came into force, bringing supplies to its 2.3 million residents.
Writing in The Guardian, Jonathan Freedland argues that the values underpinning Donald Trump’s inauguration speech yesterday, are in “direct conflict” with those of liberal democracy. He cites Trump’s view that “for too long, a small group in our nation’s capital has reaped the rewards of government while the people have borne the cost”, arguing that this is a “direct challenge to a system of representative democracy built around compromise and the balancing of interests”.
Theresa May will meet the President of the European Council, Donald Tusk, tomorrow to discuss Brexit. According to The Times, May will also make a significant speech on Brexit next week, making clear how she envisages Britain trading with the rest of the world. Liam Fox, the International Trade Secretary, claimed earlier this month that the UK hopes to be a “bridge into the European market” for the US, while also pursuing a free-trade agenda with emerging economies
